Dear Church Family and Friends,
The situation of the world and our nation has changed due to COVID-19. We have been asked to not gather with groups of more than 10 by the President of the United States. The viral pandemic is a dangerous situation and we do not know how long it will last.
The Interchurch Council last night decided to cancel ALL church activities until they meet again on April 1 to reassess what is happening with the virus and our neighbors. Until that time I will attempt to provide daily devotions beginning Thursday the 19th. We will alternate each day between print, which will come through our weekly church announcement list, and audio which will be found on the church website.
For many years I served on the American Baptist Indian Caucus and heard many stories which I have carried with me. Below I share with you in this time of crisis, fear, and anger the story of a Cherokee youth’s rite of passage.
His father takes the lad into the forest…blindfolded…and leaves him…alone. He is required to sit on a stump the whole night…and not take off his blindfold until a ray of sun shines through it. He is all by himself. He cannot cry out to anyone for help.
Once he survives the night, he is a MAN. He cannot tell the other boys of the experience. Each must come into his manhood on his own. The boy is terrified… he hears all kinds of noises…. He imagines beasts all around him. The wind blows, his stump is shaking, but he sits stoically, never removing the blindfold.
Finally after a horrific night, the sun emerges and he removes his blindfold. It is then he sees his father sitting on a stump next to him. He had been watching over his child the whole night.
We are never alone. Even when we do not know it, we have church family, friends, and a God who loves us sitting on the stump beside us.
God Bless all!
